The Processor Recognition Program (PRP) is an official APEC certification designed to help personal information processors (processors) demonstrate their ability to meet the privacy obligations set by personal information controllers (controllers). It ensures that processors effectively implement privacy practices in line with controller requirements, enhancing trust and accountability in cross-border data processing.
Unlike the APEC Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System, which applies only to controllers, the PRP focuses specifically on processors. It was developed in response to the need for controllers to identify qualified and accountable processors. Through PRP certification, processors, can showcase their ability to meet global privacy standards, positioning themselves in international data networks.
PRP certification establishes baseline privacy requirements for processors, assessed by an APEC-recognized Accountability Agent. This recognition provides assurance that a processor’s privacy policies and practices align with APEC’s standards, offering confidence to controllers when choosing partners for data processing.
